About Us

Existere - Journal of Arts and Literature is a publication established, administered, and published by students in the Professional Writing Program at York University in Toronto, Canada.

The journal was founded in 1978 at Vanier College. It was funded by Vanier College Council from Fall 2007 until Spring 2018 when the journal’s financial supporter became the Founders College Council.

In 2019, Existere moved to its current location in the Professional Writing Program in the Writing Department at York University, with financial support from the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies.

The editorial team is drawn from the Professional Writing program and is mentored by the Writing Department faculty.

Existere publishes exciting new works of poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and art from both budding and established contributors.

As of 2023, the journal will be publishing issues annually and switching from our prior inclusion of national, and international contributors to focus on creative perspectives from within Canada. Submissions are accepted all year long.

“Existere is a Toronto-based literary arts journal that publishes purposeful, subversive, and innovative new work with an interest in amplifying diverse stories and voices."
